On engagement

So, coming closer to the discussions on small change. On top of the Hamdi-reading it could be useful to have a look at Groundwire and their methods. Here are some examples:

Small change.

Hey.

The book small change by Nabeel Hamdi’s is on the libary in Chalmers (maybe just one ex!?) They have the book as an e-book at Borås university . My suggestion is to ask if we can get the e-book to HDK Libary. What do you think?

MONDAY blues

Hey Guys.

The monday blues and the fact that we now have a racist-party in our parliament made the inspiration for the Backa project disappear. I was in Backa for a short while and saw the stuff you collected in our room. Great work you made with the old articals about Backa. I have the record “Nationalteaterna på Selma Lagerlöfs torg”, gonna bring it to you so we can listen to it.

Tomorrow im gonna do real social design, playing bingo with the old little ladies at kulturhuset. Is curious about what they have to say about Backa.

By the way, don´t miss the demostration agianst racism at Götaplatsen at 18.00 today. It´s time to show that we all toghether gonna fight agianst the extreme rightwing party.

The lighthouse

In orangenburgerstrasse at  Kunstraum in Krutzberg there is a bookstore/gallery where they now showing the exibition “Trasit spaces – the tourist syndrome” where the the theme is about migration.  The artist Thomas Kippler is together with architects, engineers and local people building a lighthose in on the island Lampedusa in Italy. Almost every day we get news of stranded refugees in the south of Europe. Annually about 20 000 refugees try to reach Europe via the Italian island of Lampedusa. Thousands drown in the sea – aid organisations estimate 10 out of 100 migrants die during the dangerous crossing.
Endeavours to improve and sustain living conditions in the immigrants’ country of origin are of prime importance – but even if rich countries are willing to help, this will take time and it will be a matter of decades, if not generations, before people are confident enough not to leave their homelands.
As long as people put their life at risk, as long as people die crossing the Mediterranean in a small nutshell for the sake of a better future… we have to ask ourselves: what can be done?!
A lighthouse with a maximum strength beam can provide essential orientation at sea and help to reduce the danger to life.

More Social than social

For a wide scope of inspiration on social design projects you can have a look at the Social Design site:

An art/activism group like Rebar also captures how public space/furniture/activism/art can seamlessly be merged into social criticism – http://www.rebargroup.org

The works of Jon Rubin

I met Jon Rubin at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh some years ago, and I had followed his work for some time. I think his Independent School of Art, running a free school as an art project, was a great inspiration for my practice.

Also his other works, like the FreeMobile and recent projects like The Waffle Shop (www.waffleshop.org) and Conflict Kitchen (www.kubidehkitchen.com) resonate well with the socially engaged practices we could be exploring throughout the project. Just some inspiration..

Backa in Berlin (?)

I we been in Berlin for a week and I saw some nice stuff there. The one thing that stoked me during my visit is that almost everything in art/design in Berlin is in one way or another political. It seems that there is a general engagement for the society – social design…tada!

K u n s t w e r k e http://www.kw-berlin.de/

The artist Dor Guez was showing videos about ethnical identity by interviewing his family who is a minority in the Greek Orthodox church in the village Lod in Israel.  His family speaks Arabic, have a Christian believe but live in an Israelian society.

The questions of belonging, the conflict between etchnic groups and borders are in focus of the exhibition. I think that many of the interwieves can be transferd to the Backa Project in many ways.

If you want to see the intervjues please click on the links.
